Mold in air handlers, duct runs, registers and vents cleaned so your HVAC stops spreading it
📞 Call (423) 805-9797 NowWhen mold gets into a heating and cooling system, it stops being a problem in one spot. Every time the system runs, it pulls air across the contaminated surfaces and pushes it into every room in the house. In Chattanooga, where air conditioners run hard from May into October and many systems sit in hot attics or damp crawl spaces, the conditions for HVAC mold are common.
Older homes in Northshore, Highland Park and St. Elmo that had central air added years after they were built often have duct runs squeezed through crawl spaces and attics with little insulation. Those ducts carry cold air through hot, humid spaces all summer, and the outside of the duct sweats. Over time that moisture soaks into the duct wrap, the framing it rests on and sometimes the ceiling below.
The most common sign is a musty or earthy smell that gets stronger when the system kicks on. You may also see dark spotting on vent covers or the ceiling around registers, find water around the air handler, or notice that allergy symptoms ease when you leave the house for a few days.
We open up the system to see where the growth actually is rather than assuming. Accessible duct runs, plenums and registers are cleaned and HEPA-vacuumed under negative pressure so the debris doesn't spread through the house. Interior duct liner or flex duct that is badly contaminated usually cleans poorly and is better replaced. Coils and drain pans are cleaned so the system restarts clean, and we point out any HVAC repair, such as a clogged drain or missing duct insulation, that should be handled by your heating and cooling contractor.
Duct mold is almost always a symptom. If the system is in a damp crawl space, our crawl space mold removal service may be needed as well, and a mold test before and after can show whether the indoor air has improved.

Fogging or spraying vents does not remove growth that is already there and can hide the smell for a short time. The contaminated surfaces need to be cleaned or replaced.
If there is visible growth or a strong smell when it runs, limiting use until it is inspected helps keep spores from spreading further.
Lightly soiled flex duct sometimes can, but heavily contaminated flex duct is usually better replaced.
